A GROWTH MINDSET
All of the fourth grade teachers want our students to embody a growth mindset. When things aren't going the way we want, we might be tempted to think, "I'm no good at this. It's too hard. I can't do it. I give up. I failed." When we work hard and don't achieve the results we expect, it can be frustrating and disappointing! So what are we to do?
Use a GROWTH MINDSET! We know that our brains are AMAZING because we can actually create new ways of thinking. This in turn can create new pathways for our brain which helps us learn new skills. So, when things are challenging and we tell ourselves positive things, such as, "I'm not good at this yet. I can keep trying. Learning takes time. Mistakes are a part of learning. I can do hard things. What am I missing? My effort and attitude matter, not just my ability..." we can shift our pathway of thought and get different results. Ones that can be surprising and incredible!
This is the reason that we have chosen to mark papers with blue stars! It's our way of reminding our students to keep trying and to shoot for the stars! The papers we mark are those that need corrections, or rethinking. These may be reworked during specials, recess, homework time, or at home. Students may receive help and are encouraged to seek out an aide, teacher, parent, adult, or older sibling to work through questions that may arise.

ABSENT & MISSING WORK
Missing work due to an absence is different than assignments that are not completed in class.
- Students have two days for every day they are absent to complete the missing work and turn it in. If you know you are going to be gone for an extended time, please let your teacher know in advance. Otherwise, students who only miss one day, can receive missing work when they return.
- Present students who do not complete homework or classwork need to complete the work as soon as possible. To help students stay caught up, teachers will ask students to miss a special to finish their work when they have more than 3 missing assignments. If you have questions or concerns regarding this policy, please reach out to us. We are always willing to consider child-centered accommodations.
- Teachers will update missing work boards in class to help students keep track of what is missing. Parents may check grades through Aspire. Note: citizenship is updated at the end of the grading period.
